Congratulations to our own Ann Marie Siteman and Lorraine Bezanson (along with their teammates Jackie Foster and Tammy Foster-Veinot) on winning the 2024 Canadian Women’s Fours Championship this past weekend in Milton, Ontario! Also, congratulations to Vicki Balcom on an excellent run at the Nationals- finishing 4th in Women’s Singles and Triples.

It was a great weekend at the club as we held our Club Singles Championship and Club Novice Singles Championship. Congratulations to our winners! Thanks to Club Match Chair Pat During and his committee for organizing and to the many markers who volunteered all weekend.

Happy Birthday to our Club! Though we celebrated our official “club birthday” as part of our Natal Day celebrations- August 15th is the actual date (from when the first bowls were thrown on our greens back in 1987). Here is the picture of former Dartmouth Mayor John Savage throwing the ceremonial first bowl to open the greens back then!
Thanks to everyone who came out to the club today for our annual Natal Day Jitney! It was nice to see everyone out on the greens celebrating the big day. Congratulations to our winners of this year’s trophy- Tony MacEachern, Gerald Tower, Charlie Hilchie and Heather Salmon. Great job everyone. Special thanks go out to Pat and the club match for organizing the games as usual and to Janice Marshall and our kitchen crew for the great meal.
Congrats to the following members who have won spots over the past few weeks to represent Nova Scotia at the 2024 Atlantic Bowls Championship (to be held here at DLBC September 5th-8th):
Men’s Pairs: A: John Siteman and Raymond MacDonald Women’s Pairs: A: Debby Purdy and Charmaine Cameron Men’s Triples: B: Steve Ogden, Rick Fry, Grahame Usher Women’s Triples: A: Meg Endo-Ritchie, Mayumi Endo, Heather Salmon B: Lorraine Bezanson (with Tammy Foster-Veinot and Jackie Foster) It should be an awesome competition. If you’re interested in volunteering to make the event the best it can be- contact Co-Chairs Debbie Tower and Charmaine Cameron Wet weather didn’t rain on our parade on this Canada Day in Dartmouth! Today, we had a great celebration at the club where we had an awesome meal directed by our own Sue Ellen Horne and Gordon Foster (with contributions from many members) before our traditional Canada Day Jitney.
We had 5 rinks of action today (a bit less then usual due to the shift in timing due to the weather today) and there was lots of great shotmaking and fun by all. Congratulations to Larry Anderson, Ron Blakeney and Maureen Myers who won this year’s title with a tight 1 point differential win in the final standings. Thanks to everyone for coming out to celebrate and for bearing with us through the changes in plans. Happy Canada Day to all of our lawn bowls friends wherever you may be! It’s been quite a busy past few days for us as we got to the Gold Coast for the Australian Open. The day after we got into the country, we hit the greens for the Mermaid Beach Pre-Australian Open 2 Day Pairs. Though we finished 1-4, we had 3 of our 4 losses within 3-4 points (so all very competitive results which could have gone either way). The last game was fun as we faced a local team who were quite enjoyable to play with as both of our teams made some great shots (fortunately best for us on the day). We were lucky enough that in addition to paying down to like 6th place of 42 teams- they also had 8 lucky draw winners of $100 which we ended up taking home some prize money (a first for me in Australia!).
On the Friday, we headed to Club Robina for their Winter Triples. On their greens (which run fairly similar speed to that of Dartmouth or maybe slightly faster)- we ended up with a 2-1 record after a great day on the greens to finish 17th out of 42 teams! That night, we headed to Broadbeach to cheer on our Canadian National Team member Ryan Bester in his Worlds Gold Medal rematch against Ireland’s Gary Kelly (which I encourage all of you to watch the live stream of the game as it was quite entertaining). Yesterday, it was a tricky day on the greens for me at Benowa Bowls Club for the Men’s Singles of the Australian Open (the largest event of the tournament with 1,312 players from around the world). In my section, I had three tight battles with some top young players from all over Australia- unfortunately ending off on the wrong end of the scoreline on all of them. Fortunately there are lots of bowls left to go throughout our adventure here in all the events! Tomorrow, we head down to the southern Gold Coast for my mom to start her campaign with the Women’s Pairs of the Australian Open. Thanks to everyone back home for all of the support as we compete down here in the World’s Biggest Bowls Festival! Congratulations to Team Ogden- who won our 2nd 5-A-Side Tournament of the season! 6 teams competed all day on June 8th with games in Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours. Fortunately for all players, the rain held off for what ended up a great day of lawn bowls. Thanks to Kathy Myketyn for organizing, Nancy Latimer and Paul Knox for umpiring, Phil Balcom and Diane Appleby for marking the singles games and Kathy, Vicki Balcom and John Driscoll for providing food for the players. Many thanks to those who assisted in set up and clean up through the tournament. Lots of fun and friendly competition. Looking forward to do it again in the future! Here are your full standings:
It was a great afternoon at the club as we hosted our first big event of the season- our Opening Day Jitney. It was great to see the greens packed with 48 bowlers competing in 5 rinks of fours play and 1 rink of triples and about another 20 members cheering them on followed by a great meal of sandwiches, salads and other finger foods.
Congrats to Joyce Anderson, Carl Hillier and Charlie Hilchie who were the winners of the trophy for this year’s games. Thanks to Heather Salmon for organizing the meal and to Pat During for running the organizing of match side of the day. It was a great afternoon at the club as we hosted a crafting afternoon where participants made their own door decorations from Urban Rustic DIY Studio. Thanks to Ann Marie Siteman and Charmaine Cameron for organizing. Hopefully we’ll see everyone at our next event- our Christmas party coming up next weekend!
